The Centre for Women´s and Gender Studies at the University of Iceland is a research institution; it has been instrumental in coordinating and organizing women's studies and feminist research in Iceland. The Centre supports women´s studies at academic level, publishes feminist research, orchestrates a lecture series and seminars during the academic year and provides an information service.
The centre co-ordinates research projects on various subjects in the fields of sociology, gender research, anthropology etc. It participates in several Nordic and European project and is now taking part in og running several national projects.
The Centre is closely connected to the program in gender studies at the University of Iceland. The program is interdisciplinary in scope leading to a minor in a BA degree or 30 units out of 90, comprising two semesters or one academic year.

Irma Erlingsdottir has been the director for the Centre for Women´s and Gender Studies at the University of Iceland since autumn 2000. She finished her DEA, Degree in Literature and Gender Studies at Centre d'Études Féminines at Paris VIII, Vincennes, 1995, and is now working on her doctoral thesis. She has attended courses and seminars at Centre d'Études Féminines at Paris VIII, Vincennes, under the tutelage of Hélène Cixous and others.
