Since its establishment in 1925 during the First Greek Rebublic, it has created, maintained and enhanced a tradition, that of a socially oriented and progressive institution. Among a total number of 22.799 researchers who have been recorded in all the epistemological disciplines of the university, the 10.097 are women and the 12.702 men. In other European countries such as in Austria among 14.960 researches, the 3.842 are women and the 11.118 men, in France among 90.565 researches the 28.714 are women and the 61.851 men. There are proposals for Graduate and Postgraduate Programs for Women's Studies which have been submitted to the Ministry of Education. The proposal for "Graduate Program for Women's Studies: Gender and Culture" has been adopted and will start next academic year (2003-2004). It is interdisciplinary since the schools of Architecture, School of Greek Literature and School of English Literature of the A.U.Th and the School of Architecture of the Metsovion Polytechneion of Athens are involved.
